# Claude Code mods: two examples from the guide, and a real mod for recording your screen

_Claude series · sheet no. 2 · Claude Code 2.1.287+_

## In one sentence

A mod is a small JavaScript or TypeScript file that runs inside your Claude Code session: it observes, answers instead of Claude Code, or rewrites what is drawn. A real example: Recording Mode masks your secrets on screen while you record.

## The situation: recording your screen without leaks

| When you code | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| you don't see the context window filling up | **Token Weather**: ☀ Clear at 18%, ☇ Storm at 81%, on one line above the prompt |
| Claude is about to run `rm -rf build` | **Blast Radius** holds the command, lists the 9 files it would touch, and waits for **Proceed** or **Cancel** |
| you record a demo or share your screen | **Recording Mode**: `/rec` masks on screen the keys, the `.env`, emails, names and amounts |
| Claude must keep working on the real data | it still gets it: only the screen changes |
| a private file during the recording | Recording Mode keeps `.env` files, SSH keys and finance documents closed |
| you want your own mod | run `claude`, describe it, allow hot reload: it appears when the turn ends |
| you install a community mod | read the repository first: a mod has the same access as Claude Code |

## To try

1. Check your version: 2.1.287 or later.

   ```
   claude --version
   ```
2. Add the community mods repository, after reading it.

   ```
   claude plugin marketplace add nateherkai/claude-code-mods
   ```
3. Install Recording Mode, open a new chat, then type /rec before you record.

   ```
   claude plugin install recording-mode@nateherk-mods
   ```

> **The trap** Thinking everything is masked. Masking relies on patterns: a secret written in plain words can slip through. Watch your video before you publish it, and read a mod's repository before you install it.
