# Claude Code's effort, explained

## In one sentence

Effort does not make Claude smarter: it sets how much computing it spends, so how much it checks and tests edge cases.

| the same task with 12 hours ahead of you | high effort: it checks, tests edge cases and judges alone |
| the same task in 1 hour: a good version, then you iterate | a `low` effort: a fast answer, a starting point |
| taking your time does not make you wiser | effort does not change what the model knows |
| checking longer does not save a bad idea | more effort reduces forgotten edge cases, not a bad approach |

## To try

1. Change effort in Claude Code, even mid-conversation.

2. Give Claude a spec and ask it to interview you on what is missing.
3. Implement in low effort, review, iterate in low if needed.
4. Verify and test in high effort.

> **The trap** No need to run everything in max: more effort reduces edge case errors, but it does not fix a bad approach.
