Do Implicit Personalization and Explicit Styles Conflict? PsPLUG: A Lightweight Plug-in for Balancing Personalization and Style in Customized LLMs

The study demonstrates that explicit style instructions can undermine the unique user characteristics that personalization methods aim to preserve, a failure mode termed personalization collapse. To resolve the conflict between implicit user preferences and explicit style control, the authors propose PsPLUG, a lightweight plug-in that learns a user-specific residual after accounting for the requested style. Additionally, PsPLUG enables tuning personalization strength at inference time. Experimental results show that this approach effectively preserves user preferences while providing precise control over style adherence.
