Beyond Memory: Harnessing Long-Horizon Agents with Explicit Belief States

The authors introduce PoS, an inference-time framework that constructs and continually maintains explicit belief states as decision contexts for LLM agents. Each belief combines world state estimates with unresolved task requirements, while consistency validation detects belief trapping where agents stall without progress. Experiments across four execution and diagnosis benchmarks show that PoS achieves the highest overall performance on every benchmark across all evaluated LLM backbones.
